This item appears to be a string or cluster of spherical beads, sometimes with the ends tied together to form a necklace. If the wearer touches it, all can see the strand as it really is: a golden chain from which hangs a number of golden spheres. The spheres are detachable by the wearer, and only by the wearer, who can easily hurl one of them up to 70 feet as a Ranged Attack. When a sphere arrives at the end of its trajectory, it detonates as a Fireball spell.
Spheres come in different strengths, ranging from those that deal 6d6 fire damage to those that deal 20d6 fire damage. The market price of a sphere is listed below as they can be bought and sold separately, and the worth of a necklace is always determined by the price of the spheres currently attached plus 5% of the spheres’ cost, rounded to the nearest five silvers.
Each necklace of fireballs contains a combination of spheres of various strengths. Some traditional combinations, designated Types I through X, are detailed below.
If the necklace is being worn or carried by a creature who fails a saving throw against an attack with the magical tag that deals fire damage, the wearer must make a DC 20 Reflex save. Increase the DC by 1 for each sphere still on the necklace. If the wearer fails the save, all the necklace’s remaining spheres detonate simultaneously centered on the wearer. The necklace can also be the target of an attack, which does not need to have specific tags. It has AC 30, which decreases by 1 for each sphere still attached. If an attack is successful, the remaining spheres detonate.
Unless otherwise listed, a necklace of fireballs is an uncommon item.
