Runes

Runes are small symbols carved into wooden, stone, or metal pieces attached to the gear that they affect.

Attaching and Using: Gear can have multiple runes attached at a time. To make an item capable of holding the power of a rune, it must have an appropriate potency rune attached. This allows other runes to be added, up to the sum of their bonus values equal to the potency rune’s bonus value.

Potency runes do not grant special abilities. Instead, they boost the basic statistics of the gear they are attached to, using their bonus value. For the Armor Potency Rune, the bonus value is added to your Armor Class as an Item Bonus, while for the Weapon Potency Rune, a number of damage die (of the same size as the weapon) equal to the bonus value are added to the damage.

Runes other than the potency runes have special abilities that are either constant or activated. Activated abilities are a single action, unless otherwise stated.

For example, a Lesser Weapon Potency Rune has a Bonus Value of +2. When attached to a weapon, say a longsword, the weapon’s damage die changes from 1d8 to 3d8, as it adds two more dice. Once this is attached, the longsword can also have a number of other runes whose total bonus value is equal to or less than 2. This might be a Basic Corrosive Rune or a Basic Disrupting Rune with a Bane Rune.

Transferring and Upgrading: Runes can be transferred between items as long as they are following all the rules around attaching runes and what gear they are attached to. To transfer a rune, you must make a Crafting check with a DC equal to 20 + double the bonus value of the rune. If the Crafting check fails, the rune is detached from the original item but not successfully reattached to the new item. If the check is a critical failure, the rune gains the Broken condition and must be repaired first. If a rune is unattached, it can be attached to an item with a Crafting check with a DC equal to 20 + double the bonus value of the rune. The new item must meet all the requirements of the rune, otherwise it does not function.
