Spell: Control Water ~ Level 5

  • Area: up to 50-foot square
  • Duration: 1 minute per Proficiency Score (C)

With this spell, you can control water in an area. Each round, during your concentration action, decide which of the following effects the spell has:

  • Drought. Lower the water in the area by 20 feet. The water level stays lowered until the spell ends or you change the effects.
  • Flood. Raise the water in the area by 20 feet. The water level stays raised until the spell ends, or you change the effects.
  • Part Water. Create a 5-foot-wide trench through the water in the area, extending as deep as 100 feet. When the spell ends or you chose a different effect, the water comes rushing back in directly after your turn.
  • Redirect Flow. The water in the area moves over the ground in a direction of your choice, including over walls, objects, or uphill. If the water moves beyond the range of the spell, the spell ends, or you change the effects of the spell, the water resumes flowing as it would in terrain.
  • Wave. Create a wave 20 feet high that moves from one side of the area to the other. This wave has a 25% chance of capsizing boats that are 20 feet long or shorter. It also deals a number of d4s bludgeoning damage equal to a quarter of your Proficiency Score to all creatures in its path and moves them 15 feet in the direction of the wave’s movement. This wave repeats each round the spell is still active and you continue to select this effect.
  • Whirlpool. In a body of water with at least 25-foot depth and 50-foot square surface, you create a whirlpool that pulls creatures which are in the area or within 25 feet of the area towards the center at a rate of 10 feet per round. A creature being pulled by the whirlpool can make an Athletics check to stop being pulled. A successful check halts the creature’s movement, but they cannot move further away from the center. A critical success allows the creature to swim away at half their Swim Speed. A creature pulled to the middle of the whirlpool is in danger of drowning.

Control Water is on the Arcane and Primal Spell Lists.

Heighten (+2): For each Spell Slot of the Heightened Spell Levels (7, 9), increase the area by 25 feet on each side of the square, raise or lower the water level by an additional 10 feet (Drought and Flood), increase the width of the trench by 5 feet (Part Water), or add 10 feet to the wave (Wave).

Level 7 or 8 Spell Slot. Change the amounts to the following:

  • Area: up to 75-foot square
  • Drought: 30 feet lower
  • Flood: 30 feet higher
  • Part Water: 10-foot trench
  • Wave: 30-foot-high wave

Level 9 Spell Slot and higher. Change the amounts to the following:

  • Area: up to 100-foot square
  • Drought: 40 feet lower
  • Flood: 40 feet higher
  • Part Water: 15-foot trench
  • Wave: 40-foot-high wave
